Andrea del Sarto: the mystery of the memorial plaque
On the facade of a building located within the old village, in the now disappeared Via Vittorio Veneto, was a memorial plaque with an inscription that gave rise to a real historical mystery. In accordance with the epigraph, in Castelnuovo would have lived the famous painter Andrea del Sarto. The inscription dates from the mid nineteenth century and was posted by the owner of the house. There is one problem: no source documentary seems to reinforce the hypothesis that the artist stays in Castelnuovo.

The tombstone of Castelnuovo continues to remain an enigma. One of the most plausible hypothesis to explain the permanence of the painter in Castelnuovo is that he has found "refuge", perhaps, to escape from a pestilence.
